The Brass hopes to bring back pure rock 'n' roll

Rock 'n' roll will never die - not if The Brass has anything to do with it. With a style reminiscent of '70's rock 'n' roll bands such as Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, and AC/DC, The Brass plans to bring back what was once termed "pure rock 'n' roll".

"This kind of music can't be denied," said band member
Ernie Boetz. "It's time (for it) to come back."

Boetz, a Gainesville High graduate who relocated to Atlanta seven years ago, formed the 3-year-old band. He is the chief writer of the all-original tunes and is passionate about his music.

"Anybody can rock, but few people can roll," he said. "If (the music) is not based on blues, it won't roll."

To help sell the band, Boetz is shopping for professional management; meanwhile all the footwork is being done by the band members. And so far, marketing hasn't been easy.

"Our style of music isn't commercially popular at this time," Boetz explained.

But this obstacle hasn't deterred Boetz; he is confident that The Brass will succeed in reviving "true" rock 'n' roll.

"People come up to us after shows, and they will just thank us and ask 'Why can't we hear this all the time?" Boetz said.

"When we are in front of a crowd, we will win any crowd over," he said with conviction.

And Boetz backs up this comment with a guarantee:
"If (The Brass doesn't put on) one of the best rock 'n' roll shows you've ever seen, I'll give you your money back," he promised.

Ed Waller, Jr., owner of Green's Grocery on Riverside Drive, attended a recent Brass concert in Atlanta and liked it.

"They're superb for a hard-rock band (that does) original music. The sound and performance was real good," Waller said.

The Brass has played at several clubs in Atlanta - such as
Smith's Olde Bar, Masquerade, The Roxy, the Wreck Room, Hard Rock Cafe and Lou's Blues Revue - but this weekend the group will perform in Gainesville for the first time, and Boetz is looking forward to it.

"I'm ecstatic about it," he said. "It's kind of like a homecoming for me."

Along with Boetz will be the other three members of The Brass -
Lucky Forrester, an Atlanta resident, on guitar; Chuck Rogers, Cumming resident, on Drums; and J. C. Keever, from Atlanta, on bass. Boetz is lead singer and plays lead guitar for the group. Forrester performs backup vocals.

The Brass released its first CD in October 1996. The self-titled recording is available at several major record stores in Atlanta and Blockbuster Music and Onyx Worlds of Entertainment in Gainesville. Fans can also purchase the CD for $10 at shows.

Upcoming plans for The Brass include gigs at Lou's Blues Revue and
Somber Reptile in Atlanta followed by a Southeastern tour.

Meanwhile, you can catch The Brass at 10 p.m. Saturday at the
Monkey Barrel on Washington Street. Cover Charge: $3; half-price for Brenau and Gainesville College students with I.D.
